We'll Schedule the Meeting Tomorrow, I Swear...

An email blast from NYU that raises a serious question:
Is two hours of pastries and coffee really the best cure for procrastination?

What's in a Name? (Guest Post: Charles Gilbert and Erica Johnson!)

You may be more familiar with the marketing name, Canola Oil.

Now I know what you're thinking, but the name change was not due to feminist fryers. Instead, the real problem was that the original rapeseed oil was so toxic that the FDA banned it for human consumption in 1956.

And rumors that a few Southern Senators from a certain political party (which will go unnamed) have reintroduced it in hopes of combating unwanted sexual advances are completely false. I hope...

Cookin' with Grass!

From the same people who gave us repetitive wontons and food finding challenges comes "plant fried rice" and strong, if ambiguously worded, ordering instructions.

While We Wait for Florida to Vote (Guest Signage: Ian Hoek Spaans!)

A reminder to extra-hungry Gainesville, FL Taco Bell patrons: Don't eat the counter. Or the sign. Or something.
No wonder these people take twice as long as the rest of the country to vote. BTW Florida: the election's over.

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things...

"Mr. Falafel" of Park Slope received some big-name press coverage.

Either it didn't turn out well or Mr. F needs some help picking his quotes.

Full Disclosure: Thoughtless Food Series

Continuing our infectious liquids series, it's the most off-putting combo since gin and tonsillitis. At least Steve's C-Town is upfront about it.

Eat Me! (Guest Signage: Tamika Joy!)

And I thought mayonnaise of fries was gross. Taste the difference a comma makes at the Riviera Cafe, NYC.

Sexual Tourism: The New Staycation (Guest Signage: Darryl Bennett!)

This reminds me of the summer I spent working at Barnes and Noble. We shared a parking lot with Dick's Sporting Goods, BJ's Wholesales, and Seaman's Furniture.

It's All in the Name (Guest Signage: Darryl Bennett!)

  • But it tastes so bland by itself.
  • That's one of the top five reasons it isn't called a "melter."
  • Can I melt one butter?
  • Are they following the MLA or APA guidelines on multiple punctuation?
  • If all caps equals yelling, I'd love to be in the mind of this sign maker. It would be like having DMX narrate the lunchroom rules.

Going Nuts

An entire half aisle?!? Duane Reade is clearly devoted to peanut promotion.

Of course, the use of peanuts as a category leads to the assumption that they also sell laundry and houses. Maybe even entire families.

Truth in Advertising: Thoughtless Food Series, Part II

As you may know, I’m into healthy eating. I tend toward salads and lean protein, and I’m downright un-American in my avoidance of high-fructose corn syrup.

So you can imagine my joy when I found out that Rite Aid is seeing mayor Bloomberg's suggested soda ban and raising him a pointless display of words by offering a full line of Fat, Sodium, Gluten, and even Wheat free treats.

But there's more to this story. (Hint: the payoff is in the Caramel Creams)
